Pros and cons
Pros
- Nucleus found espresso nearly indistinguishable from the DF64 Gen 2 in blind tests.
- Coffee Chronicler calls it one of the quietest grinders it has used.
- Both reviewers report low retention, about 0.1 to 0.2 g, helped by the rotary knocker.
- Variable speed from 800 to 1200 rpm, which Nucleus says rivals lack.
- RedditRecs owners praise grind quality across methods.
Cons
- Nucleus notes a wobbly power button and a light, lidless catch cup.
- Filter is sweet but more muted and somewhat astringent next to the Fellow Ode, per Nucleus.
- Coffee Chronicler says popcorning occurs and the burr chamber needs six screws removed.
- RedditRecs owners call the dial clicks mushy and say stock burrs are weaker for pour-over clarity.
What owners report
- Noise opinions differ. Reviewers call it quiet, but one RedditRecs owner heard a high-pitched resonance while grinding.
- Dial repeatability. Owners suggest an aftermarket magnetic pointer for repeatable settings.
- Burr swaps are hard. Owners who want aftermarket burrs are pointed toward DF models.
What experts measured
- Nucleus reports 150 W motor and retention around 0.1 to 0.2 g.
Alternatives
DF64 Gen 2
Nucleus found espresso very close, but it is louder.
