Cons
- Reviewers say you must hold the button down for the whole grind, and there is no timer or auto-stop.
- In tests it measured 82 and 84.1 dBdB (decibels)A decibel (dB) is the unit for how loud a sound is, and a lower number is quieter.Lower is betterMore in the glossary, and a lab comparison of twelve grinders found it the loudest.

€269 at Power Finland →What do owners say about the Moccamaster KM5?
- Loud or quiet depends on who you ask. Coffeeness measured 84.1 dB but calls the sound more pleasant than some other grinders. Homes & Gardens and TechRadar call it quiet, and Tom's Guide measured 82 dB and calls the noise moderate.
- Cleaning takes a screwdriver. Homes & Gardens, Coffeeness and connect-living all say the hopper is screwed on, so reaching the burrs means several steps. Tech Advisor suggests a weekly wipe and a full clean every three to six months.
- No timer, a mound in the jar, a short duty cycle. Tom's Guide suggests weighing beans first because there is no timer. TechRadar and Homes & Gardens say the grounds pile up and need a shake to read the lines. Tech Advisor says it can run for about a minute, then needs a 15-minute break.
- Changing the setting wastes beans. Homes & Gardens says the dial has to be moved while the grinder runs, and it counted about 30 g of coffee lost across four settings. Coffeeness also says to adjust only while the motor is running.
- Espresso: one source disagrees. The maker, Tom's Guide and Coffeeness say it cannot do espresso. Tech Advisor says it used setting 5 to feed a bean-to-cup machine and got faultless espresso.
What have experts measured on the Moccamaster KM5?
- Coffeeness measured 84.1 dBdB (decibels)A decibel (dB) is the unit for how loud a sound is, and a lower number is quieter.Lower is betterMore in the glossary and Tom's Guide measured 82 dB.
- Homes & Gardens timed 60 g in 24 seconds, and TechRadar reports about 25 seconds for 60 g.
- A Scandinavian lab test of twelve electric grinders, reported by Stiftung Warentest, called it the loudest and heaviest at 4.5 kg, with a grind result narrowly ahead of the rest.
What are good alternatives to the Moccamaster KM5?
Baratza Encore
Coffeeness says a good drip grinder does not need to cost much and points to the Encore.

Coffeeness prefers its looks and auto-stop sensor, and neither grinder can do espresso.
