Pros and cons
Pros
- Kaffeemacher measured dose variation of at most 0.4 g over 40 shots, similar to professional grinders.
- Kaffeemacher found a narrow main particle peak, among the better of 24 grinders it tested.
- Sage lists 60 settings, a 0.2-second timer and two portafilter cradles.
- CoffeeGeek credits 46 timer memories and repeatable settings.
- The inner burr can be adjusted to shift the whole range, which Coffee Kev calls automated shimming.
Cons
- Retention is moderate to heavy: Kaffeemacher measured about 2.7 g, and CoffeeGeek calls it pretty massive.
- Kaffeemacher saw shot time fall from 29 s to 22 s by the tenth shot as the grounds heated.
- Coffee Kev says it lacks torque for very light roast espresso, and grounds clump at espresso settings.
- Coffeeness says consistency drops at coarse settings, and CoffeeGeek says there are too many fines for Chemex.
What owners report
- Long-lived, with a weak link. Coffee Kev reports over 9 years of use and calls it one of the most reliable grinders at this level. He says some commenters report impeller wear and Sage not selling spare parts.
- Purge before the first shot. Coffee Kev suggests a short purge each morning. Kaffeemacher advises grinding out a few grams after 15 minutes idle.
- Retention readings differ. Coffeeness did not see chute retention problems and still suggests a 1 to 2 second purge. CoffeeGeek says never to single dose it.
What experts measured
- Kaffeemacher measured 16 seconds for 18 g and about 2.7 g of retention, found by taking the grinder apart.
- CoffeeGeek measured about 2.1 g per second at pour-over setting 35 and timed doses within 0.3 g of target.
- Coffee Kev reports about 60 to 65 dB from 1 metre. Coffeeness reports 70 to 80 dB.
